After School Chess

PS 41’s popular after school chess program has three sessions per school year (Fall, Winter, and Spring). The program is open to all levels of players. The Fall session will be held entirely on Zoom.

Grade K on Mondays 3:15-4:15pm
Children will receive instruction and supervised game play. Instruction will include piece movement, pawn promotion, castling, basic opening strategies, and basic checkmate patterns. Game play will begin after several weeks of instruction once all students can properly move the pieces. Teachers will stress good sportsmanship and respect for the game and other players. This class is designed for beginner students only.

Grades K-1 on Mondays 3:15-4:25pm
Children will receive instruction and supervised game play. Instruction will include pawn promotion, castling, basic opening strategies, basic checkmate patterns, master games analysis, and basic tactics (pins, forks, discoveries). Teachers will stress good sportsmanship and respect for the game and other players. Students of all levels of play are welcome.

Grades 2-5 on Mondays and Thursdays 4:30-5:40pm
Children will receive instruction and supervised game play. Instruction will include basic and advanced opening strategies, multiple checkmate patterns, endgame play, master game analysis, and basic and advanced tactics (pins, forks, discoveries, deflections). Teachers will stress good sportsmanship and respect for the game and other players. Students of all levels of play are welcome. Students can register for either or both.

Advanced Chess on Thursdays 3:15-4:25pm
Children will receive instruction and supervised game play. Instruction will include advanced opening theory, positional evaluation, master game analysis, and advanced tactics. Teachers will stress good sportsmanship and respect for the game and other players. For students rated USCF 800+ only. Please contact ps41chess@gmail.com before registering.

Mondays: 9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8, 11/15, 11/22, 11/29, 12/6, 12/13 and 12/20 –14 classes $350

Thursdays: 9/23, 9/30, 10/7, 10/14, 10/21, 10/28, 11/4, 11/11, 11/18, 12/2, 12/9, 12/16  and 12/23       -13 classes $325

All classes will be held on Zoom, check class information above for times.  Games will be played online using lichess.org.  After school chess registration takes place in September, January, and April. Late registrants are welcome based on availability and will be a charged a prorated fee.
